SIGN OPERATIONS (OPERATIONS ON SIGNS)
Operation on signs respects from positive(+) and negative(-). When adding two or more numbers with the same sign simply add those numbers and copy the sign.
If it's not, then compare which is is larger by absolute value and the larger one dominates the sign. In example "+5-2" or
5-2, the 5 is larger than 2 by 3, so the preceding sign to follow is "+" because the 5 has 3 time "+" over "-" which is found in "-2". This means that "5-2 =3". In the case of "-5 + 2" or "2-5", "-5" has 3 negatives more than 2 positives. By compensating negatives and positives, it will show that "-5" has 3 negatives to be left. So, "2-5 = -3" or "-5+2 = -3". This only applies to additions and/or subtractions.
In multiplications, by the rule, when same signs multiplied to each other, it will always be positive. This illustrates that "(-)(-)=+" and "(+)(+)=+" as well. As an example involving numerical. this follows that "(-2)(-3)=+3" or simply by saying "(-2)(-3)=3", same also by saying as "(-2)(-3)=3".
In division, like signs also results "+". Like having " + / + = +", also " - / - = +". For example, "-4 / -2 = 2", and " 6 / 2 = 3". If unlike signs play in the operation like " + / - = -" also it follows that " - / + = -". As an example, " 4 / -2 = -2" and " -4 / 2 = -2". Its is always a challenge to every beginners' minds how to deal with this logical operators. But a to develop a "muscle memory" in our brains speaks the real way how to deal with this.
Mastery of this operation needs daily practice. To avoid doubts and confusions, approach this problem little by little. Solve each day problems like this and make it a daily routine, and it will resides in our brain permanently.
Below were some example with solutions to augment our knowledge about operations on signs.
Illustrative examples:
1. +2 + 3 or simply 2+3 = 5
2. +2+3+5 = 2+3+5= 10
3. -2-3 = copy the sign (-) then add 2 and 5, so -5 is the answer.
4. -2-3-4-1 = copy the sign (-) then add 2,3,4, and 5 so -10 is the answer.
When adding or subtracting two or more numbers with different signs, compare which from the two numbers is higher. Copy what is that higher number sign and check how more the higher number than the lower number, and copy it.
5. +5-2 = 5-2
Here, 5 is higher than 2 by 3. The sign of the higher number 5 is +, so copy the + sign and how much more 5 than a 2, It's 3. Therefore, +3 or simply 3 is the answer. Having not a preceding sign before the number means positive.
6. -5+2 = -3
Here, 5 is higher than 2 by 3. The sign of the higher number 5 is - this time, so copy the - sign and how much more 5 than a 2, It's 3. Therefore, -3 is the answer.
