**ADDITION CONCEPT**

**The symbol:**

*Addition*is a term used when two items were joined or combined. Addition is only one part among the four fundamental operation in arithmetic. Addition has a "+" as a symbol. This "+" conceptualize the mind that two quantities should be joined. Other common terms used as alternate were; total, sum, joined, meet, and others might not be mentioned here.

If, for example, there is one marble on a table, and there is another one marble on the floor. Getting one marble from the table and another one from the floor then put them (the marbles) inside the bag and so, we have one plus another one marble joined inside the single bag. The we can say that there are two marbles in the bag. This concept applies to all addition operation.

**Illustration:**

This illustration tells the concept of addition. When "1" is added with another "1" tells us that we have two 1's which is presented by numerical concept "2". This is also applies to other object and other numerical concepts.

**More illustration:**

When adding two "1's" and three "1's" we need to at first add the two "1's" then followed by three "1's". Adding two "1's" gives us 1 + 1 = 2. Adding three "1's" gives us 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. This mean we can now add both results like 2 + 3 which gives us 5 or simply 2 + 3 = 5.

**Now try to add the following:**

a). five "1's" and four "1's"

b). one "2's" and five"1's"

c). seven "3's" and two"2's"

d). three "4's" and two "5's"

The idea is getting easier after we have the basic concept of addition. And we then have to go with purely numerical presentation: Let say 5 for five "1's", and 3 for three "1's", etc. By adding number to other number simply we do join them with the"+" symbol with idea what was it and how those numbers behaved having "+" between them . So with the object.

There are a lot of presenting addition as method for getting the sum. May it be horizontal form or vertical. Single addition used by elementary pupils, say grade one was usually in the horizontal manner. Grade two level and up used vertical. From above the discussion of addition concept was the basic among the basic except the numbers was discovered and accepted by men and still used until now for different number complexity.
